Chris joined FIPP in October 2009, and was previously international managing director at Bauer Media (formerly EMAP) where he’d been for 29 years and had spent the past decade building international publishing businesses and licensing magazines. George Green of Hearst gave him his best piece of advice, that the only way to do international business was face-to-face and thus he pretty much knows the best seating configuration of every major airline fleet in the world. He joined the FIPP Board in 1998 and served as both treasurer and chairman, and liked it so much he thought that running it would be ‘really cool.’ So that’s what he now does.
Chris speaks French, just about understands Spanish if they speak s-l-o-w-l-y, and after 6 months in Budapest his knowledge of Hungarian stretches to igen (yes), nem (no) and sör (beer), but absolutely nothing else.
Place of birth: Hartlepool, UK
Favourite magazines: Mojo, Bike, Empire, When Saturday Comes, Four Four Two, World Soccer, The Guitarist and The Economist.
Interests: Magazines, football, airline schedules, motor bikes, playing guitar (not very well, but very loud). And a son that persuades him on to the Playstation 3 for regular bouts of humiliation.
You can’t keep this member of staff away for very long. She originally joined FIPP in 2000 as Membership Services Administrator, but quickly learnt the ropes and became Business Development Manager. During this stint she published four members’ directories, was involved in four WMMs, three regional conferences and two congresses!
In 2005, she decided that it was time to experience something new and went off for three years. But alas in 2008 she returned to FIPP as General Manager, holding the fort while Helen Bland went on maternity leave. Helen returned to a new part time role in January 2009, meaning that Christine continues to lead the FIPP team on a day-to-day basis.
She is fluent in Spanish and can just about remember how to speak some French, but please don’t put her on the spot or expect her to respond without blushing with embarrassment.
Place of birth: Middlesex, UK
Favourite magazine: Good Food
Interests: Travelling, photography, cooking (and, of course, eating it afterwards!!)
Helen Bland, company secretary and information services director
Formerly vice president, Helen returned from maternity leave in 2009 to take overall responsibility of the masses of quality editorial output from FIPP. Which means a lot of proof-reading. She is also secretary of the FIPP Management Board of Directors and is responsible for all administrative matters relating to the Board and governance. As the longest serving staff member, she is our historical memory and she has a wide circle of relationships with members around the world.
Helen speaks French, can communicate in Spanish, can order drinks in German and identify the nationality of most global names or phone codes at a glance.
Place of birth: Mexico City, Mexico
Favourite magazine: National Geographic (and even though she bought a subscription for her parents, she has sadly not subscribed herself yet).
Interests: Eating, skiing, wildlife viewing and travelling to drink, eat, ski and view wildlife...when not strolling along Brighton seafront with her family.
Natalie could well be described as the FIPP understudy, supporting everyone but never receiving the accolades directly. Her biggest projects include working on World Magazine Trends and the Membership Directory and assisting with the audit of Magazine World. However in busy times and when the pressure is on, you can often here those familiar words echoing through the FIPP office …. “Natalie will do it”. A friendly smile accompanies every task, even database updating, so if you have a question and you are not sure who to ask “ask Nat”, we all do!
